Methods of enshrinement - An Introduction to leatherwork and object formation

Join us on April 4th and 11th from 12PM–4PM for a two-part immersive leatherworking experience guided by Genève-Florence. Each session runs 4 hours, totalling 8 hours of workshop time.

Refracting time and systems of memory, their practice focuses on the tangible dialogue between maker and material. Through leather, weight and meaning move across semiotics and human history—attending to the subtle, embodied act of being.

Over two sessions, participants will be introduced to leather as both material and medium, exploring themes of lingering, protection, and ancestral memory. You will engage in a reflective, hands-on exploration centered on the act of “enshrinement,” while learning essential techniques in leatherworking, including conceptualisation, patterning, cutting, and assemblage.

Each participant is asked to bring one object (or a small grouping of objects) to be embedded within their piece. With guided, hands-on instruction, you will create a personal, consecrated leather form intended to store and/or protect your chosen object(s). Base materials and tools will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring additional materials of personal significance.

Upon registration, participants will be asked to submit, via Google Form, their chosen object(s) along with a singular concept for its enshrinement to be refined during the workshop. Each proposal will be reviewed prior to the first session, and feedback may be offered to ensure feasibility in relation to skill level, time, and material or spatial constraints. Projects should remain small enough to be largely completed within the 8-hour timeframe.
