Raf Simons SS03 "Consumed" Commodity Sweater
A defining piece from Raf Simons' Spring/Summer 2003 "Consumed" collection, this sweater reflects the designer's exploration of consumer culture, identity, and the relationship between youth and branding. Rather than simply condemning consumerism, the collection examined the attraction of logos, brand names, and the abundance of products available to a generation increasingly using consumption as a means of self-expression.
The sweater features "commodity" printed repeatedly across the back, creating a deliberately repetitive graphic that references the compulsive nature of consumer culture. The collection title, "Consumed," appears in a smaller, pocket-sized print at the front. A classic raglan construction and slim-fitting sleeves keep the silhouette understated, allowing the graphic treatment to carry the conceptual weight of the piece.
