An extraordinary artifact from the Cold War, the PTM-1 (Противопыльная Тканевая Маска) was developed by the Soviet Union as an accessible civilian anti-dust mask intended to provide protection against radioactive fallout and irradiated dust in the event of nuclear conflict. Produced before the widespread introduction of the GP-5 gas mask, the PTM-1 was designed as a low-cost, easily manufactured alternative that could be distributed—or even reproduced at home—to maximize civilian preparedness during the height of the Cold War.

Unlike conventional gas masks, the PTM-1 was not designed to protect against chemical agents or radioactive vapours, serving instead as a practical barrier against airborne particulate matter. Official government instructions accompanied the masks, allowing civilians to fabricate their own using locally available materials, resulting in countless regional variations in fabric, construction, and finish. The examples offered here are believed to be military-contract produced, featuring blue cotton construction, shaped side darts for an improved fit, clear plastic eye windows, and integrated fastening straps associated with versions issued to Soviet armored vehicle crews.
